 The most accessible Donald Ross course in Pinehurst NC and Southern Pines NC area is the Southern Pines Country Club. - Men's Tees – 6,005 yards (68.6/122)
My favorite holes: the 3 rd (Par 3), the 8 th & 12 th (Par 4's) and the 15 th (Par 5).
The Club
This is just an awesome place to play golf . It's in the old part of Southern Pines, and part of the course weaves through a neighborhood in town. The clubhouse is dated, the Pro Shop is limited and the grill is about average, but at SPCC it's all about the golf.
The course is actually owned by the Elks Club, and over the years, that's been a limiting factor when it comes to keeping the course maintained. But the management of the course has just been taken over by Avestra Golf Management, and the Southern Pines CC is one of the 6 courses included in the new Avestra Membership Package (click here to read more), which is an incredible deal. Regular Rates, including cart, range from $65 to $105, depending on the day and time of year.
Every time I play at SPCC, it seems like it is in a little bit better shape. Already, it is back in above average condition for the area. All of the holes are great, so there's not much sense in listing favorites. Suffice it to say that if I could only play one area course other than the fully private courses in the area, the Southern Pines Country Club would be it. You can tell you are on a special course – and you know it is going to do nothing but get better every time you go back. Real Estate
There are homes on the course and others with a view of the course. The neighborhood that surrounds the course is not a planned community – it has just been there forever. The Club is convenient to just about every place in Southern Pines, though. Many of the best area restaurants are downtown Southern Pines less than a mile from the course, so you're never too far away even if you live in Pinehurst (which is only 10 minutes away).

THE BOTTOM LINE – This is a lot of people's favorite course when you factor in the value, the setting and the quality of the golf. Plus, the course is relatively short, so you can shoot a very good score if you hit the fairways! Carding your best score on a Donald Ross course is a lot of fun! |
