Country Club (SPCC) Neighborhood is an established in-town neighborhood with homes situated around or near the Southern Pines CC Golf Course . . . . . . only about ½ mile from downtown Southern Pines. The homes vary in type, house size and lot size. It’s a fantastic area with quiet streets. SPCC is popular with families. You can walk to town, but it’s not as close to downtown as the Downtown So Pines neighborhood. The benefit, on the other hand, is that it’s more tranquil and the neighborhood feels more like a woodland park than a community close to town with houses on gridded streets and small lots.
Most of ‘em are around 2,500 square feet and more than 90% of them were built before 2000. It’s not really a “golf neighborhood” in the traditional sense; and there are just a handful of golf front homes. And the Southern Pines Country Club is not a private golf club . . . . it’s more of a community club (pool and tennis) that’s a great hangout for kids in the Summer. The club itself is an odd duck. It’s actually owned The Elks . . . . and you’ll often hear people call it The Elk’s Club!! The 18 hole golf course was designed by Donald Ross; and it’s chocked full of history. For about 50 years, Sam Snead held the course record. There are dozens of golf courses around Pinehurst . . . and some are world famous venues that have hosted US Opens, US Amateurs, PGA tournaments, LPGA tournaments, and the list goes on. But, it’s not an exaggeration to say that Southern Pines CC (a short and plain as it is) is in the top 3 favorites for just about every serious golfer in the area. The reason – you can experience golf the way it used to be played.
It’s a great walking and bike riding neighborhood. Plus, the Elks Club has a great swimming pool that’s a very popular kids hangout in the Summertime. Lastly, you are really close to Downtown . . . . . and some of the residents have been known to saunter down to The Sly Fox after the kids fall asleep for pint or two!!
