Mid Pines Golf Resort – PinehurstPinehurst NC

To me, this is one of the best kept golf secrets in the Pinehurst area. It is located in Southern Pines NC, just about 5 miles from Pinehurst NC.

The Donald Ross course is part of the Pine Needles/Mid Pines Resort. Open for public play year round, Mid Pines is the companion course to Pine Needles, which has played host to the US Women’s Open 3 times in the last 15 years. Mid Pines weaves its way through rolling topography reminiscent of Augusta National. It is lush and green, and the pine trees, azaleas and the old clubhouse make you feel like a million dollars. Everyone is polite and the place just has a lot of class. It is hard to describe – you just have to go for a visit.

The course is tough, but it’s very fair for an average golfer and you can shoot a great score if you are a low handicapper. There are a number of Donald Ross layouts in the Pinehurst area, but of the ones that are meticulously maintained, Mid Pines is the best in my opinion for a mid to high handicapper. Rates range from around $160 in high season to $130 in low season.

My favorite holes: the 2 nd (Par 3), the Par 9 th (Par 4) and the 15 th (Par 5).

The Stats:

  • Par 72
  • Pro Tees – 6,530 yards (71.0/126)
  • Gentlemens’ Tees – 6,115 yards (68.7/122)
  • Ladies’ Tees – 4,921 yards (68.8/119)

The Pro Shop is staffed by knowledgeable folks who look and act like serious professionals. The Clubhouse and Hotel opened back in the 1920’s, and everything is very well maintained so that you know you are in a world class venue.

The bottom line – Mid Pines is a place where I take my best friends who are better golfers when I want to enjoy a really relaxed and special round of golf in a memorable setting.

It is a peaceful, pressure free place where I can shoot a decent score with a smile on my face the whole round . There are one or two charity tournaments per year at Mid Pines, and if you are on a budget, the tournaments make the course accessible to you at a very fair price.
